Nature's processes determine a rough diamond's carat weight, clarity and colour, but the hand of a master craftsman is needed to release its fire and beauty.
How well a diamond is cut, "proportions", is vital to the value of each diamond and can have up to a 50% effect on value. A good cut produces facets whose angles maximize the brilliance and dispersion (sparkle) of a diamond.
When light strikes a diamond, some is reflected, "external reflection", the balance of the light enters the stone. The better the proportions of a diamond, the higher the quantity of light that will be internally reflected and returned to the eye as brilliance and dispersion. The never ending decision in a diamond cutter's mind is to cut to better proportions or to retain more weight.
