Diamond Shapes

Most people are familiar with the round or oval cut diamond, but diamonds are available in a much broader range of shapes: some of the most common can be found below.

Diamond Shapes

How do you determine a Diamond's Worth?

Diamonds are graded using a system referred to as the Four C's:
Clarity
Colour
Cut
Carat Weight

The value of any diamond is related to its quality and the quality of a diamond is determined by examining it for the Four C's. Use the links on the menu to the left or click on one of the Four C's above to learn more.

Isee2 - NEW!

The Isee2 takes you beyond the basic Four C's - clarity, colour, cut and carat weight - and allows you to see for yourself the beauty of the stone you're selecting. To learn more about this unrivaled and patented technology available at Poag's, CLICK HERE.

Special Diamond Cuts

In addition to the diamond cuts and shapes noted above, there are a few special diamond cuts that have only become available recently due to advances in cutting technology. These cuts include Super Ideals, the Lucére Cut diamond and the Tycoon Cut.

You can learn more about these special diamonds, which are all available at Poags, by clicking here or clicking the "Special Cuts" link on the menu to the left.

Words of Wisdom

Never buy a diamond without viewing it under a microscope and getting a money back guarantee of the quality. Be aware that diamonds can be drilled by laser or fracture filled to reduce the visibility of inclusions. These treatments should always be disclosed, but to be safe, always ask.

You will also want to be careful not to purchase jewellery based solely on appraised value. Appraisals are generated to satisfy many different purposes and don't necessarily reflect a true selling price. Click here to learn more about appraisals.

It is so important to spend some time with our Graduate Gemologist to be shown the differences in colour, clarity, cut and carat weight so you can make an informed decision. A gem quality money back guarantee is also very important because if the stone you purchase is out only one colour and one clarity grade, the value is drastically affected.

We have a complete Gemology Lab in our store to help answer all your jewellery question.
