Roy King

He designed jewellery for the likes of the Beatles and the Royal family, he won numerous prestigious awards and is internationally recognized.  At Poag Jewellers, we have a line of jewellery inspired by his greatest creations!
This designer is Roy King, and after an illustrious career, his works of art still live on today.  Roy King began his jewellery career at the young age of 14 as an apprentice in Hatton Garden, England, with a master Italian craftsman - who would crush with a mallet any of King’s work that didn’t meet his standards. After long days at the bench, King would attend classes at night to perfect and hone his skills.  After the Second World War, Roy King set up his own workshop, where he offered everything from "A tiara to a tiepin".  He also ventured into watches, or as he put it "Jewellery that tells the time".  By 1965, he had his own factory - 65 employees producing 25,000 pieces per year!  He continued working well into his eighties, having the opportunity to see some of his original pieces come up at specialty auctions in London, England.

The Roy King© Collection is a vast, growing line of jewellery made with impeccable design and outstanding quality.  The collection is flawlessly crafted with the highest quality Italian sterling silver that has been rhodium plated to give it a lustrous shine and ensure low maintenance.  The stones that are used in the collection are all hand selected and imported from France.  The cubic zirconia used in the collection are all cut to precise "Hearts and Arrows" symmetrical proportions, very close to those of ideally proportioned diamonds.  Many new styles are introduced every year, come in and check out our selection of Roy King jewellery today!

The Allure of Rose Gold

It’s the hottest trend today in jewellery, with its unique hue and subtle look it is quickly becoming the must have this year.  Rose gold jewellery is unique, it will go with anything - whether showcased on its own or paired with a bright white or demure yellow gold.  Rose gold will give a unique presence to any jewellery piece, whether it be rings or pendants, earrings or watches.  Rose gold is universal, it looks wonderful on almost any skin tone and is a classic on either men or women.
Rose gold jewellery is created by combining 24K yellow gold with a copper alloy to give it a rich rosy hue.  Many of the collections in the store are showcasing rose gold this year.  One example is seen in our engagement and wedding ring sets, where rose gold shines on it’ s own, or is combined with white gold for a luxurious look.
Watches have also seen an explosion of rose gold hues in many of the styles.  By adding a hint of rose gold to these pieces, it transforms them into the must have for this year and the staple in your jewellery collection for years to come.

Rose gold is also making an appearance in our selection of pendants, chains and earrings.  By adding a touch of rose, it can add that little extra to any outfit.  Rose gold is even playing a part in a very important collection we are showcasing in the store this year - The Care Collection.  It is a line of jewellery designed around the little pink ribbon, and part of the proceeds of every piece sold are being donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Gemstone of the month

If your birthday is in the month of April be prepared to be dazzled with diamonds! Diamonds are the traditional birthstone for the month of April - but are perfect for any occasion.
Diamonds have a long and winding history, the first mention of these brilliant specimens dates back to 500 BC.  Through the years, diamonds came to represent the essence of purity and invincibility and a token of everlasting love.  In fact, the first time a diamond was given as an engagement stone was back in 1477. The Archduke of Austria gave one to Mary of Burgandy - and they are still the most popular engagement stone 500+ years later. The newest and latest news is that now diamonds are being mined, cut and polished right here in Ontario!

Since February 2006, DeBeers Canada has been working around the clock to open Ontario’s first diamond mine - The Victor Diamond Project. The project is located in the James Bay lowlands of Northern Ontario, and has started producing diamonds.  Recently, Crossworks Manufacturing of Vancouver announced they have been selected to be the diamond manufacturer who will receive $25 million in rough diamonds per year to cut and polish in Ontario.  They will be opening a cutting facility in Sudbury and have a great opportunity to market these diamonds. Dylan Dix, the director of Crossworks says “There is an enormous potential that this offers Ontario and greater Sudbury in particular”.
The mine has a projected life of approximately twelve years, and is expected to produce 600,000 carats of diamonds every year.
These stones will be available this fall, Poag Jewellers will definitely be a source for diamonds mined, cut and polished in Ontario!
