Watches

Are you tired of traditional watch styles? Is it “time” for something unique and different?  If so, check out some of the latest innovations in design, metal, or time keeping mechanisms.
Unique Design
If you’re looking to express yourself in a stylish and modern way then try the unique designs by 01The One Watch Company. Creator Anton Kraft had the idea to “create a watch line perfect for independent people who follow their own unique path in life and trend-setters who express their individuality by the way they dress.” These fun and trendy watches are all stainless steel, with LED displays and are available in three innovative time reading systems.
Latest Metals
Want to know the time but don’t like the weight of a watch on your wrist…do you have skin that is sensitive to certain metals? If you answered yes then titanium may be the metal for you. Boccia lady’s and gent’s watches are designed and made by a team of European designers from Italy, Spain and Denmark. They are made in pure titanium which is a 30% stronger than stainless steel and 50% lighter. Titanium has the added benefit of being hypo-allergenic as well as corrosion, perspiration and acid resistant. Boccia has quartz and automatic watches to choose from and are water resistant to a minimum 30 meters. Don’t let time weigh you down go titanium with Boccia.
Alternative Mechanisms
Citizen Eco-Drive presents time keeping technology with the power of light. A solar conversion panel and energy cell is the power provider for the quartz mechanism. All you need is a little time in natural or artificial light and the solar panel will convert the light energy and store it in a rechargeable lithium cell. Environmentally friendly and on time without the worry of replacing batteries.

Another Eco-friendly choice in eliminating batteries is an automatic watch. Automatic watches have long been the choice for the watch connoisseur looking for a timeless, classic, and elegant time piece. Now this classic mechanism is available in the latest dress, casual or sport styles. The spring that drives the watch is wound by the movement of the watch on your wrist. Wear your watch with pride and admire the intricacies of a spring driven mechanical movement which has been the basis of accurate time keeping for generations.

Globes

Take a trip around the world with a beautiful hand crafted, high quality Alexander Kalifano genuine gemstone globe. These globes represent hundreds of hours of artistry and craftsmanship that result in a colourful piece of artwork.
The globes are hand crafted with over 25 different gemstones. The artisans start out by selecting individual gemstones that are then hand cut to the perfect size and shape for each individual country. Once each stone is fitted to the core of the globe, it is beveled on the underside to match the contour of the surface and allow the stone lay flat on the core.
After the process of affixing all the countries to the core, it is time to add the oceans. At this point there are two methods the company chooses from. Method one includes fitting individual pieces of blue together to cover the open range of the ocean. The second method involves combining a mixture of mother of pearl and abalone shells which is then ground into a powder and mixed with a dye and bonding resin. The mixture is then applied to the surface of the globe to create a wavy metallic marine blue ocean.

The next application involves the shiny 24K gold plated or antique silver plated brass ribbon representing the longitude and latitude. Each globe then has many coats of polyurethane sealer applied to add a durable and protective glossy finish. The final step involves mounting the globe on one of many unique bases.
This amazing technique is also used to create book ends, key chains, paperweights, pens, and even flat maps in antique looking gold tone frames.
Globes are a great accent to any office or home. Need a gift for someone graduating? Show them they have the “World ahead of them” with a globe.

Gemstone of the month

The traditional birthstone for the month of June is Alexandrite.  This is an exceptional and unique gemstone, with a rare colour change phenomenon.  In daylight the stone is a beautiful emerald green, but when viewed under incandescent light it transforms into a purplish to raspberry red colour.
The stone has a very noble history, especially in old Imperial Russia. The first crystals were discovered in 1834 in the Ural mountains.  This distinctive gemstone was originally named for the Russian Tsar Alexander II.  The reason for naming the stone after the tsar was because the discovery was made on the day he came of age!  It was also very popular as the principal colours of the tsarist Russia were red and green.

Alexandrite is very rare, due to its chemical composition and the specific geological conditions that must be present during formation. For alexandrite to form, chromium and beryllium must both be present, and the environment must be free from the element silica (if silica was available during this process, emeralds would form instead!)  There are two issues with this scenario, the first is chromium and beryllium, as a rule, do not form together as they are usually found in contrasting rock types.  The second issue is, silica is the second most common element in the earths crust.  So for these specific circumstances to occur is very rare indeed.
The stone is still mined in the mountains of Russia, but in very small quantities.  The newest and most economic source is now in Brazil, where very good quality specimens are being mined.  Some smaller sources include Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Madagascar.

Alexandrite is also deeply intertwined in the mythical and astrological psyche.  Alexandrite is most associated with the planet Mercury - which is known as  ’ the trickster’ .  Because of the colour change and duality of the stone, it has also become known to represent love and jealousy, all at the same time.  Some even believe that having an alexandrite can help clarify any doubts about love and marriage!
Alexandrite is a unique creation, with a phenomenon rarely seen in gemstones. It has a mystical allure and intriguing duality.  The perfect stone for for someone who would appreciate its qualities or for that hard to buy for person on your list!

Meteorite Q-Ray
Looking for something unique, something exceptional, something out of this world??  At Poag Jewellers, we have just the thing – come in today to check out our exclusive collection of meteorite jewellery!
This collection was born from years of experimentation and testing by goldsmith Chris Ploof of Chris Ploof studios in Rhode Island.  He mastered the art of forging meteorite into workable material, then delicately combining the material with platinum and gold to create pieces that will last a lifetime.
The meteorite used is exclusively from the Gibeon Meteorite found in Namibia.  This meteorite crashed into our atmosphere some 30,000 years ago, and was officially discovered in 1838 by John Herschel.  The iron metal in the meteorite is estimated to be approximately four billion years old!
Not all of the meteorite found is of equal quality, much of the material is deeply fractured and included from its tumultuous ride to earth, and many pieces are damaged from being exposed to the elements for thousands of years.  According to Chris Ploof, for every piece that is suitable for his jewellery – another twenty or so have to be rejected.

Each piece of meteorite that is used has its own individual look, and no two pieces will look the same.  This is due the fact that when the meteorite is traveling through space, an extreme slow cooling takes place and creates a unique crystalline pattern.
Available in gold, platinum and titanium, and with the option to set stones, the unique look and out of the ordinary concept of meteorite rings have made them one of our most distinct items available in the store and definitely worth the visit
