50th Event
On Sunday October 4th, Poag Jewellers hosted our 50th Anniversary Event celebration and it was a huge success!  The gala was held “under the tents” on Frank Street, with the road being shut down from Front Street all the way down to Centre Street.

The day began with the talented cheerleading squad from the University of Western Ontario performing amazing stunts on the street outside the tent, while inside there was a very special opening ceremony where the MP, MPP and Mayor of Strathroy were all able to say a few kind congratulations to the Poag Family.

The guests were entertained throughout the day by the wonderful DJ’s Tucker and Taz from FM96 and Jeremy and Chris from MYFM radio.
The most elite of Poag’s suppliers came down for the day to showcase their beautiful merchandise, as well as Andrew Douglas Clothiers and Optionelle from London, Ontario.
The guests were also captivated by presentations given by each of the suppliers as well as beautiful men’s and lady’s clothing fashion shows.

One of the most exciting features of the day was the opportunity for everyone to view the first diamonds from Ontario’s Victor Mine project!

The guests were treated to the delectable catering from Chef Les Cooks and delicious wines from Vineland Estates Winery.
With the exception of a little bit of rain, the event was a wonderful time and a great celebration of 50 years!

Gemstone of the month
50 years is considered the “Golden Jubilee”, and to honour Poag’s 50 years in business our gemstone of the month for October will be gold!

Gold has been a highly prized and sought after item since the beginning of recorded history!  One can see why is has been so popular for so long – gold never rusts, it is versatile ( it is so ductile that an ounce of gold can be stretched to a length of over fifty miles or beaten into a sheet to cover a hundred square feet), and is available in almost every colour.
Gold is mined in many different ways - small scale methods include panning and with the use of metal detectors, while large scale mining can include dredging from lake and sea beds to hard rock mining in open pits and underground.

Gold has a long and storied history and many interesting characteristics. The chemical symbol for gold is Au, from the Latin ’aurum’ , which translates to ’shining dawn’ .  The Incas refered to it as ’Tears of the Sun’.  It has been an intrinsic part of many of the world’ s cultures - from the ancient to the modern.
Oceans are the greatest single reservoir of gold at Earth’s surface, containing approximately eight times the total quantity of gold mined to date. However, the current cost of extracting it is more than the gold is worth. About 10 billion tons of gold are estimated to be held in suspension in the oceans of the world.
Gold is also available in a wide variety of colours - from yellows and whites to pinks and greens!  Depending on which alloys the base gold is alloyed with, any of these fantastic colours can be created.
So whether you are celebrating your own ’Golden Jubilee’ or are looking for a unique and beautiful piece, there is definitely something available in the wide and wonderful world of gold!

Feature product of the month

This month we dedicated our featured product to Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  To recognize this tremendously important cause we are featuring a gorgeous 14K white and rose gold pink ribbon pendant showcased on a white gold cable link chain. The pink ribbon pendant is beautifully designed and set with 0.32 carat of round brilliant cut diamonds.
There are also many other beautiful breast cancer pieces in the store that are available such as bracelets, ring, earrings and other necklaces.
The pink ribbon signifies a sign of hope for those in the battle and a sign of courage for those who have fought the battle. Breast cancer affects thousands of people each year and not only affects the individual but their friends and families, so in support of those in need a portion of each of the sales goes to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
